Memorial Badminton Tournament in Hamilton
Road Safety will once again be the theme of the Annual Anuj, Anjo and Richard (AAR) Badminton Tournament, scheduled to be held on July 23 and 24, 2011 at the Waikato Badminton Association Stadium (Dey Street), Hamilton East.
The AAR Memorial Doubles Badminton Tournament, seventh in the series, will commence at 830 am on the opening day and at 11 am the following day.
The Hamilton Malayalee Association (HMA) is organising the two-day event.
Organising Committee member Naveen Eapen said the Tournament will feature New Zealand Open, Community Open and HMA Open.
“It will be played on a League and Knockout basis. Entries will be restricted to 20 teams of male League players,” he said.
Anjo (22), Anuj (17) and Richard (12) were killed in a road accident on July 11, 2005 when they were returning with their friends in their car to Hamilton after a holiday in Hastings.
The incident happened outside Taupo.
Anjo, an engineering student at the Waikato University and Anuj, studying in last year of school were the only sons of K J Antony and Annice, while Richard, a primary school student, was the younger of the two sons of Kurian and Gracy Joseph.
“As well as remembering Anjo, Anuj and Richard, the Tournament is dedicated to many other youngsters who lost their lives in traffic accidents. We support the efforts of the Police and the Community in promoting Road Safety,” Naveen said.
