Indian achievers honoured in America

Siddhartha Mukherjee, the Pulitzer Prize winning Indian-American writer of the ‘The Emperor of All Maladies’, a biography of cancer was among the recipients of the ‘Light of India Awards’ at a ceremony held in New York City on June 5.

The Awards recognise excellence of Indians living abroad.

Delhi-born Mukherjee, Assistant Professor of Medicine at Columbia University, won the award for excellence in Medical Sciences.

Other winners of the Awards, instituted by ‘Remit2India,’ a Times Group online money transfers unit, included Columbia University Professor and Economist Jagdish Bhagawati and noted authors Amitav Ghosh and Indu Sundaresan.

Arun Sarin, former Chief Executive of the Vodafone Group, won the Lifetime Achievement Award for Global Corporate Leadership.

“Remit2India’s ‘The Light of India Awards’ is our humble initiative to acknowledge the contributions of the global Indian community in making India the emerging superpower,” Times of Money Group President Avijit Nanda said.

“It is great to see so many leading luminaries excel and build the profile of India globally,” Anil Kumar Sharma, Chairman of The Amrapali Group, Title Sponsor of the event, said.
