Indian businesses can promote our India Strategy

Business forms the backbone of any economy.

The National-led Government understands this.

We have worked hard over the past four years to ensure that Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) receive support and encouragement to grow, especially since they employ almost a third of all employees.

This is particularly important, given the challenging economic times we have faced in recent years.

The community has also played a big part in recognising and rewarding businesses that make outstanding contributions to the community.

Awards get better

I applaud the efforts of Indian Newslink in organising the Indian Business Awards. The contribution of 12 enterprises was acknowledged under different categories on Monday, November 19, 2012 at the Awards Presentation Ceremony held at Sky City Convention Centre in Auckland.

My special congratulations are to Multitrade International Limited, which won the ‘Supreme Business of the Year’ Award.

Each year, the number of entrants in the Indian Newslink Indian Business Awards gets larger.

In my view, this truly reflects the strength of entrepreneurship in our community, along with the contribution that we as migrants have made and continue to make to our adopted motherland.

I congratulate all winners and thank all others for their wonderful contribution.

Last week I visited India with Primary Industries and Local Government Minister David Carter.

As research undertaken by a number of independent organisations shows, India will overtake Japan to become the world’s third largest economy this year.

NZ India Strategy

Its GDP will account for 5.8% of the world total in Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) terms. In the long term, India is likely to grow faster than China due to its younger population.

For New Zealand businesses, this represents a great opportunity to export our products.

Currently New Zealand exports to India stand at $917 million.

Aiming to grow our exports to India, the Government has put in place the ‘New Zealand Inc Indian Strategy.’

This is a first of its kind strategy to increase the internationalisation of New Zealand’s economy.

The strategy recognises India as an important bilateral partner for New Zealand with ambitious, high-level five-year goals and actions to achieve them.

Regular Ministerial visits between India and New Zealand have significantly helped in further developing positive relations between the two countries.

The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) currently being negotiated between New Zealand and India will help achieve the six strategic goals of ‘New Zealand Inc India Strategy’ for furthering our ambitions of improved relationship with India.

National understands that neither government nor business alone can achieve this. If we are to achieve a FTA and the benefits that will flow for New Zealand and its citizens, we will require the drive and energy of businesses working collaboratively with NZ Inc government agencies.
