Fiji marked India’s 72nd Independence Day yesterday (August 15) hoisting the tri-colour Indian National Flag.
INS Sahyadri Paraded the Guard and the Flag was hoisted by Mr Vishvas Sapkal, High Commissioner of India with Captain Shantanu Jha, Commanding Officer INS Sahyadri and Captain Manish Rai, Defence Adviser.
This was the first instance of an Indian Naval Ship celebrating India’s Independence Day in Fiji, INS Sahyadri is on her way home after participating in the Rim of the Pacific Exercise off Hawaii, along with ships of the US, New Zealand and Australian Naval forces.
Carl Gomes served the Indian Navy from 1967 and following retirement in 1990, was employed in Merchant Navy. He lives in Auckland.
