Information workshops for new arrivals

Staff Reporter

New migrants including refugees who complain that there is no proper settlement process would have themselves to blame if they do not attend the workshops organised by government and non-government agencies.

Foremost among these is the Auckland Regional Migrant Services (ARMS), which has assisted more than 30,000 new migrants since its establishment in 2003.

Extensive Coaching

Regional Communications Manager Chinwe Akomah said that the Information Workshops cover a wide range of issues relevant for skilled migrants, international students, other work visa holders, former refugees and their families.

“ARMS staff collaborates closely with Auckland’s service providers and community groups.  We organise Local Settlement Networks, Settlement Network Steering Groups, a Regional Settlement Support Network, and a Regional Settlement Support Steering Group. These services are delivered at a number of locations in Auckland,” she said.

Starting 2015

The Agency will conduct a series of workshops From February 3 to March 27, 2015.

“These information workshops will include top tips and guidance for finding work, information on the education system, health, homeownership, legal rights and budgeting.

The popular job search workshop is also back for new season, with four sessions in February (on 3 and 17) and March (on 3 & 17),” Ms Akomah said.

She said that new migrants who have been in New Zealand for less than two years with Work to Residence Visa, Residency, a Silver Fern or a Work Visa would be eligible to attend the free workshops.

English Pronunciation

The ARMS English Pronunciation Course will return next month to assist new migrants who find understanding and communicating in English in workplaces that are predominantly ‘Kiwi.’

“Participants in this course will learn use of subtle aspects of speech and pronunciation and how to develop clear articulation,” Ms Akomah said.

Regional Tour

As well as learning English and understanding a number of issues, the participants will enjoy visiting a number of popular attractions such as the Botanic Garden on the Regional Bus Tour on February 28, 2015.

Further information on the courses and workshops can be obtained on (09) 6252440 or in person at the office of ARMS at 532 Mt Albert Road, Three Kings Plaza, Auckland.
