Issue 418, July 1, 2019
In shuffling her cabinet, reassigning portfolios and inducting one Minister into the Cabinet (please read our stories under Homelink) Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has made it clear that she expects her ministers to perform and deliver on the pledges that she and Labour Party made as a part of the election campaign in 2017.
Undoubtedly, she has emerged as a Leader of compassion in the wake of the Christchurch massacre on March 15, 2019 and as a tough Prime Minister in dealing with her Cabinet and Caucus colleagues.
However, there are a number of challenges that she faces as the country’s Chief Executive, the foremost of which is KiwiBuild, which has fallen far short of its target. She needs to ensure that the team of Ministers now in charge of the Scheme pick up speed and deliver. There are a number of other areas which will require the attention of Ms Ardern before she faces the public at the polls, which about 15 months away.
Although the National Party, the main Opposition, is undergoing a leadership crisis, its MPs are sharpening their swords to strike at every move of the government. They would certainly try and savage the Coalition Government.
We will discuss the issues at length in the ensuing issues.
