Journalism textbook hot off the press

A textbook for journalism schools was launched in Auckland recently.

Dr Grant Hannis, Senior Lecturer heading the Journalism Programme at the University’s School of Communication, Journalism and Marketing has edited the book titled, ‘Intro,’ published by the New Zealand Journalists’ Training Organisation.

The Book, written by journalists and journalism educators was launched at the conference of Journalism Education Association of New Zealand held at AUT University recently.

“It reflects the modern journalism environment, with chapters on using social media to find stories, writing for the web and digital photography. Basics are also covered, with chapters on newsgathering, news writing, interviewing, and specialist rounds like court and sport,” Dr Hannis said

The book contains chapters on print, online, TV and radio journalism and reporting on diversity reflecting New Zealand’s multicultural society.

Crisis of confidence

Journalism has suffered a crisis of public confidence lately and hence it is not surprising that there are chapters on media law and journalism ethics. There are online exercises, with model answers,” Dr Hannis said.

He led an editorial team comprising Massey University Senior Lecturer Dr Cathy Strong, AUT University Senior Lecturers Greg Treadwell and Allan Lee and Waikato Institute of Technology Lecturer Charles Riddle.
