Jugalbandi programme reverberates with young talent

Younger members of the community showcased their talents in various forms of music at an event organised by the Sargam School of Indian Music in Auckland recently.

The Jugalbandi programme presented by the students of the School, was held on July 26 at Blockhouse Bay Community Centre.

Junior students Aarohi Madhur, Amita Joshi, Angel Akashna Jeet, Divnesh Kumar, Heta Prajapathi, Isha Malik, Kareena Kumar, Kush Prajapathi, Nihal Chand, Pavitra Malik, Rani, and Riyansha Priyanka Sen commenced the programme with ‘Vande Mataram,’ and ‘Alaap,’ which reflects the depth and competence of musicians.

Amita and Jayana Patel initiated the Jugalbandi round with ‘Aaj Aaye Sham Mohan’ in Raaga Yamana. They presented the composition in Ek Taal (12 beat cycle), followed by a Tarana in Teen Taal (16 beats). It was an excellent rendition with the singers complementing each other. They were accompanied by Akhil Madhur on Tabla.

Sitar & Tabla

Shalina Sandran on Sitar and Surbhi Sharma on Violin presented Raag Bhupali (an evening Raag that evokes the emotion of separation and sadness), a rhythmic presentation as a sequence of ‘Alaap,’ ‘Jod’ and ‘Jhala,’ followed by a composition in Rupak Taal (7 beats). The two youngsters concluded their session with a composition in Teen Taal to the accompaniment of Shantini Sandran them on table, setting the pace for a relaxed evening.

Budding Vocalists

The vocal Jugalbandi by Roshan Raju and Amrita Kaur in Raag Malkauns was par excellence. In classical music, this Raag is usually rendered late at night since it possesses comforting and meditative qualities.

Sardar Yadvinder Singh (Amrita’s father) and Shamal Lal accompanied them on the Tabla. The audience applauded their melodious duet, ‘Pyar Nahin Hai Sur Se Jisko, Voh Moorkh Insaan Nahin.’

The waves of harmonious music swept through the evening with a finale by Basant Madhur on the table, fittingly harmonised by Shamal Lal, Prashant Kumar, Akhil (Tabla) and Deepak Madhur on Harmonium. Their performance was enthralling.

The concert ended on a lighter note with a mesmerising performance by Nisar Mirza who sang a Ghazal and a song in his mellow voice accompanied by Yashi Yamini and Anmol, students of the School.

Dr Rajesh Joshi is a recent migrant from India. She lives in Auckland.
