Labasa Lions waiting to pounce

The New Zealand Labasa Babasiga Lions are aiming high at the forthcoming Veterans Soccer Tournament in Auckland.

The Team, comprising Over 35 and Over 40 Divisions, began its training sessions before the Christmas holiday season and is in good shape to take on veterans from other teams.

“We aim for a top four finish in both Divisions. The Team will feature a number of veteran players including Rauf Khan, Abdul (Hakim) Kimbo, Mubarak Shah, Mohammed Faruk, Manjoor Ali, Master Dewan and Bashir Dean,” Vice-President and Former Fiji Athletics Rep Shiraaz Shah said.

Master Managers

He has been guiding the Team since 2005.

He said that the Labasa Babasiga Lions will have Binesh Chand and Dev Menan respectively in charge of Over 35 and Over 40 Divisions.

“Both bring years of experience, football know-how and some fresh direction. The Team has been training under the watchful eyes of these two managers,” Mr Shah said.

Established in 2000 by former Labasa and Fiji Rep and President Sabhan Shah and former Rewa Rep and Patron Mohammed Faruk, the Team has played in the finals of Veteran Soccer tournaments earlier.

“It has boasted players like Sabhan Shah, Zicky Zoing, Hussein Sahib, Mohammed Faruk Mubarak Shah, Faruk Shah (Tinku) and many other former stars of Fiji and Labasa Soccer,” Mr Shiraaz Shah said.
