Let our youth inherit greener pastures

Most of us come to New Zealand for the promise of greater things.

For some, greater things means the promise of a better job or study opportunities, for others it is safety from war or strife, for most, it is the chance to give our children a better future; and for all of us, it is the sheer beauty of the country.

That is why elections are always crucial.

Elections are a time for us to not only stocktake the last three years but also to look ahead to the next three years and beyond.

We cannot afford to be complacent that things will work themselves out. We have to take action and be prepared to do our bit.

One of the biggest issues for me is how will my choice affect my children in 5, 10 or 20 years? It is well and good to think about the next three years, but it is also important to think about the future we will be leaving for our children.

Important values

This is why the Green Party’s values are so important to me.

The Green Party puts a focus on our children and the future that we create for them.

Their wellbeing is a priority, which is why we are proud to introduce our ‘Healthy Teens’ Policy, which provides free healthcare for children from the age of 0 to 18.

We know that their success in education, employment, and life in general, must be built on a foundation of health.

The Green Party also emphasises the state of the planet that we will be leaving behind for our children. They will suffer if we leave issues such as climate change unchecked.

Our Climate Protection Plan provides an avenue through which we can control our carbon emissions, and puts money back into families and business.

Climate Protection

Revenue from the Climate Protection Plan will feed back into families through a $2000 income tax-free band. The Climate Tax cut means businesses will benefit from 1% company tax cut.

We want a society in which we and our children would be able to support ourselves and have job security. This is why the Green Party has invested in promoting research and development so that we can create more sustainable jobs.

Innovation, especially green innovation, is vital to our economy’s growth and job creation.

We all deserve a New Zealand that has a fairer society, a cleaner environment and a smarter economy.

These are things that the Green Party will deliver.

Dr Russel Norman is Member of Parliament on Greens List.
