Low overheads accrue price advantage

When Jay Narayan decided to venture into business less than three years ago, he thought a store that stocked and sold spices would not only be commercially viable but also attract public attention.

He was right. Jay’s Fresh Mart Limited in Papatoetoe became a centre of attraction for the residents in the region and other parts of Auckland.

“We wanted to do something different. As well trading in an extensive range of spices that are popular with Indo-Fijians, we were keen to keep our prices low. I am the sole person looking after the shop and the savings made on overheads are passed on to customers,” Mr Narayan said.

He said Jay’s Fresh Mart traded in more than 500 items including fresh vegetables and specialist items from Fiji such as Kava.

“An overwhelming majority of our customers are Indo-Fijians and all of them say they like to shop with us because they know they will not only get friendly service but also their favourite items at low prices. I would like to extend the cost benefit to our people all the time,” Mr Narayan said.

Although the prices are low all the time, the shop has specials during the festive season to mark Eid-Al-Fitr, Diwali and other observances.

Jay’s Fresh Mart is open from 8 am to 8 pm throughout the week.
