Malayalees conquer hearts at Badminton Tournament

The Kerala community earned top honours at the annual Badminton Tournament held in Auckland last month.

More than 80 games were played at the ‘Love All 2014’ organised by the Auckland Malayali Samajam at the Waitakere Badminton Association Centre on June 28.

The event marked the 15th anniversary of the Association, to commemorate which Special T Shirts were sold at the venue.

Samajam President Maneesh Joseph said that the proceeds of T Shirt sales went to IHC New Zealand as a part of the members’ efforts to serve the community.

Pip Callinan, IHC North Shore Volunteer Coordinator received the donation.

Mr Joseph said that the semifinals and the final games brought with them moments of anxiety and nervousness.

Auckland Deputy Mayor Penny Hulse, who was the Guest of Honour, distributed prizes and certificates to the winners.

The Samajam’s Badminton Event Committee, which organised the competition, comprised Venugopal Nair (Tournament) and Joseph George, Mathew Jacob and Sunny Mathew (Members).

Mr Joseph said that ‘Onam 2014,’ the biggest festival of the Samajam will be held on August 30 at Mahatma Gandhi Centre, 145 New North Road, Eden Terrace.
