The new Committee of the Auckland Malayali Samajam has launched a new wing to promote younger members of the Kerala community.
Sasi Nambissan, who was elected to the post of Vice-President along with other members of the Executive Committee at the Samajam’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on April 6 at Mt Roskill Intermediate School Hall, said that there was a pronounced need to encourage youngsters to understand and appreciate the rich cultural heritage of their homeland.
“We elected a separate committee for the Youth Wing (on April 19). We will assist our children and young men and women to organise activities that would instil in them the pride of belonging to a great country and state,” he said.
Among the others elected to various posts of the Samajam at the AGM were Soman Mathew (President), Soumini Varma (Secretary), Sujit Thomas (Joint Secretary), Titus Stephen (Treasurer), Julie Vinu, Roy Francis, Shali Clemant, Siva Prasad VG and Sudhir Nair (Committee Members).
Area Representation
“We will co-opt area representatives into the Executive Committee and widen the activities of the Samajam in Auckland. We have a number of programmes under consideration,” Mr Nambissan said.
The Youth Wing comprises Noble Celmant (President), Riya Baby (Secretary), Steven Philip (Treasurer), Allwin Shaji, Amy Jacob, Arun Sasidharan and Ashwathy Subramanyan (Committee Members).
Mr Nambissan said that a workshop will be held for the Youth Wing members on Saturday, July 27 at Mt Albert Senior Citizens Hall.
“The web site of Auckland Malayali Samajam (www.aucklandmalayalisamajam.org.nz) is being revived under the supervision of Ratish Kurian.
“Our activities for the 2013-2014 Samajam Year will commence with a Badminton Tournament on Saturday on May 25 at New Zealand Badminton Centre (443 East Tamaki Road, Dannemora) in Botany,” Mr Nambissan said.
