Malayalis mark Onam in Christchurch

The Christchurch Kerala Association and the Kerala Cultural Forum celebrated this year’s Onam in separate venues.

Each event was attended by 200 Keralites living in Christchurch and was colourful with a variety of dance, skits and music performances on stage.

Onam is observed in memory of popular King Maveli, who ruled Kerala. It also denotes the harvest festival, celebrated in September by Malayalis around the world.

A Flower bed made with fresh flowers and a vegetable lunch with at least 20 different curries and a variety of traditional Kerala sweet dish ‘Payasm’ served on Banana leaves were among the highlights of the two events, which brought together the Christchurch Kerala community and people from other ethnic groups.
