Malayalis unite to mark Onam Festival

Malayalis unite- Onam in Auckland.jpgMalayalis from Kerala and other parts of the world will come together next week in Auckland to mark Onam, one of the most important festivals in their calendar.

Although primarily a Hindu festival, Onam denotes the harvest season and hence would be celebrated all Keralities. Besides, it would demonstrate their solidarity and spirit of unity, transcending religious and other beliefs.

More than 2000 people will gather at the festivities beginning at 5 pm on Sunday, September 12 at the Mahatma Gandhi Centre, located at 145 New North Road in Eden Terrace.

Auckland Malayali Samajam is organising the event at which Ethnic Affairs Minister Pansy Wong will be the Chief Guest. Opposition Leader Phil Goff, Members of Parliament Dr Jackie Blue, Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi, Dr Rajen Prasad, Auckland Mayor John Banks and others will attend the festival.

Samajam President Roy Pallimalil said Onam is the most important festival in the Association’s list of annual programmes.

“Onam is the largest and most colourful festival in the South Indian State of Kerala. Celebrated by Malayali speaking people, it brings joy, peace, harmony and goodwill,” he said.

He said Kerala was a model state with the highest literacy level, with a pluralistic society of Hindus, Muslims and Christians living in harmony.

“Keralites have a broadminded approach to life, with mutual respect for social and cultural values. The same values are evident in New Zealand,” he said.

Among the highlights of the festival would be a cultural programme and ‘Onam Sadhya’ a special menu representing the cuisine of the State.
