Man shot dead by Police, North of Auckland

RNZ, Auckland, March 31, 2018

Police said they shot down a 29-year-old man this morning between Warkworth and Puhoi after he approached officers with a weapon on State Highway 1, near Pohuehue.

They provided immediate first-aid, but the man died at the scene from his injuries.

More information would be provided at a news conference this afternoon, Police said.

Priority for Police

The Police Association said its priority at this time was to look after its members.

“What they are going through is very traumatic and nobody wants to be in that position so we provide all the support we can,” Vice-President Marcia Murray said.

A representative from the Association was sent to ensure the Officers’ safety and welfare.

Ms Murray said that the Association also provided support and representation through the investigation process.

Detours in place

Meanwhile, State Highway 1, between Grand Drive in Orewa and Woodcocks Road in Warkworth is likely to be closed all day, the Transport Agency said.

Agency spokeswoman Rua Pani said that people travelling north should turn off at Silverdale to State Highway 16 and those travelling south from Warkworth should turn off at Woodcocks Road.

“Customers can still travel to Orewa, Hatfields Beach, Millwater, and Waiwera but they can’t travel any further north than Grand Drive, that is the last exit.”

Signs and Updates

There were signs with updates overhead on the Northern Motorway, but many motorists were ignoring them, she said.

“They are giving our contract staff a really hard time and becoming quite abusive with them because they’ve got to (Grand Drive) and cannot get through.”

She urged motorists to delay any travel in the area until tomorrow.

Head of the local Neighbourhood Watch Dennis Main said that the area was unusually quiet.

There was normally traffic streaming through on SH1, he said.

Since about 6 am, he had only seen what he thought was a St John Ambulance.

And one motorist said he saw road spikes just before the offramp at Silverdale at about 430 this morning.

Police had been stopping vehicles and letting them through one-by-one, he said.
