Meditation course for children

An introductory meditation course for children would be held in Auckland on February 18.

Vipassana Centre is organising the course for children in the 8-12 age group in Onehunga but details were not available at press time.

The course will be held from 9 am to 430 pm.

Falgun Shah of Vipassana Trust said that children would learn ‘Anapana,’ a technique that observes natural and normal respiration.

“Anapana is a simple and scientific technique based on morality but not religious in approach. It uses a natural object to focus and is non-commercial. The objective is to enable children to experience the benefits of meditation,” he said.

According to him, regular practice of this technique would accrue many benefits, including improved concentration and memory, increased self-confidence, greater capacity to study and ability to deal with agitation, fear, anxiety and pressures in life.

“Anapana also enhances goodwill for others. The meditation sessions are combined with discussions, creative activities and games in smaller groups. These courses are run on voluntary donations,” Mr Shah said.
