Others too plan their own events

It would be a day of ‘serious mental and physical exercise,’ meditation and even fun as more than a dozen Indian associations and clubs are brought together by the Honorary Consulate of India to mark ‘International Yoga Day’ on Sunday, June 24, 2018 at Mahatma Gandhi Centre, 145, New North Road, Eden Terrace, Auckland.

Hundreds of people of all ethnicities are expected to participate in this first ‘Mega Event,’ commencing at 930 am.

The two-hour programme is fourth in an annual series, and is a part of the worldwide celebration since the United Nations declared June 24 as the ‘International Day of Yoga.’

Specialist Yoga instructors from the Art of Living Foundation New Zealand will conduct the Yoga sessions and teach various ‘asanas.’

Participants have been requested to bring their own Yoga Mat.

Coffee, Tea, Juice and Snacks will be available free.

Participating Associations

New Zealand Indian Central Association is leading the Programme, with many others including Auckland Indian Association, Auckland Tamil Association, Bharatiya Samaj, Bihar & Jharkhand Sabha, Gujarati Samaj, Marathi Association, Probasee Bengali Association, Telangana Association of New Zealand, Telangana Jagruthi of New Zealand and Telugu Association of New Zealand.

It will also be marked in other important cities in New Zealand including Auckland and Christchurch in collaboration with the Indian Diaspora associations.

Modi takes stance

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who started the movement with a suggestion during his speech at the UN General Assembly on September 27, 2014 (the world body adopted a Resolution on December 11, 2014 making June 21 as the International Yoga Day), leads thousands of people in Rajpath, New Delhi on that day.

The ‘Yoga Fever’ gripped New Zealand with almost all Indian and non-Indian organisations joining the observance throughout the country. Led by the Indian High Commission, hundreds of people have realised the significance of standing on one leg for moments, which, if practiced daily, can accrue panacea for a number of bodily ailments.

Indian Association of New Zealand

Indian Association of New Zealand  will celebrate ‘International Yoga Day’ at Howick Leisure Center, 563 Pakuranga Road, Howick, Auckland  on Sunday, June 17 from 930 am to 12 pm.

Trained yoga instructors from Art of Living, Yogathon, Achel Hot Yoga and Brahma Kumaris will be leading the group in practicing breathing, relaxation and various Yogasanas.

This is a free family event for all, but please take a Yoga mat and water bottle with you.
