Model of the Fortnight

Life can never be dull and days can seldom be empty for people who involve themselves in projects and programmes that offer help and support to the less fortunate, especially people afflicted by diseases.

Dhruti Morar, our Model of the Fortnight is one of those people with compassion and commitment to serve individuals and groups.

The 23-year old Zimbabwe-born young woman of Indian origin is pursuing her scholastic career as a student of the Master of Speech Language Therapy course at the University of Auckland.

“I believe that gaining an entry to the course was an achievement in itself as the number of student intake is restricted to 18. As a Speech Language Therapist, I help children and adults with communication and swallowing disorders. I am privileged to help people,” she said.

As well as helping people affected by Aphasia at the Centre for Brain Research Gavel Club, Dhruti helps in voice treatment on people with Parkinson’s disease.

“I plan to start a Gavel Club for people with Parkinson’s disease with Philippa Williams Friary and Suzanne Purdy, respectively Clinical Director and Head of Department of Speech Science at the University of Auckland,” she said.

The Year that is slipping by has been one of the busiest for Dhruti, filled with photo shoots, catwalks, dancing and public speaking, in addition to her career-filling roles in classrooms and the clinic.

“I have done a number of things which I had never even dreamed earlier. 2013 has been really an amazing year. It is not just what I did that made it a special year but the fact that I met several people who inspired me,” she said.

Dhruti considers her participation at the Miss Indianz 2013 competition as a highlight. She presented a fusion dance number combining Ballet and Bharata Natyam for the ‘Miss Talent’ title.

Dhruti is also an active Toastmaster, having been Vice-President of ‘Education for Varsity Toastmasters’ in 2011, in addition to winning the ‘Toastmaster of the Year,’ title that year.
