Music contest to focus on global challenges

If you have talent in music with a concern for the challenges facing the Earth, you could be a vibrant participant at a global contest.

The Austria based International Association for the Advancement of Innovative Approaches to Global Challenges (IAAI) is organising the contest to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development due for celebration in June in Brazil.

A number of global agencies and youth networks are participating in the event known as Rio-20 Summit.

Simon Matafai, a Law, History and Music student at the University of Auckland has been appointed as the New Zealand National Coordinator for the global contest.

He also directs the Matafai School of Music and many other community choirs. He was one of the conductors at the Rugby World Cup 2011 opening ceremony held in Auckland last year.

Simon was the first Pacific youth delegate to represent New Zealand at the UN Millennium Development Goals Summit held in New York (2010) and at the recently held UN COP 17 Climate Change Conference in Durban, South Africa.

He said that the ensuing contest aims to encourage the youth to express their hopes, concerns and thoughts on the future of the Earth through the resonance of music as a powerful expression that incites commitment for sustainable development.

“The Contest will collect musical messages from global youth exploring global solutions for sustainable development. The winners will qualify for a trip to Rio de Janeiro to attend the Rio-20 Earth Summit in June 2012 and make the voices of global youth heard through their music,” he said.
