New dancing challenge coming up

Two new concepts to bring out the finest talents in dancing will form two unique competitions later this year.

Organised by the team that has presented the annual ‘Desi Intermediate Dance Off’ competition, the twin events, called, ‘Desi Dancing Queen’ and ‘Da Crew Challenge’ will be held at Telstra Clear Pacific Events Centre in Manukau from 630 pm on Saturday, July 6, 2013.

Famida Adam and Tanya Mehra are producing the ‘Desi Dancing Queen’ competition.

“This is a competition for girls and women with backup dancers. However, it is the lead dancer who will be considered by the judging panel. The tagline for this contest is ‘A Dance Comp for Women by Women,’ which we believe will be exciting and entertaining,” organisers said.

Motivating women

Famida and Tanya said that the competition aimed to motivate and encourage dancers in a positive environment.

“We believe that performances play a developmental role in a dance education. It provides girls opportunities to showcase their achievements and motivates them to reach their full potential. Being on a competition dance team requires commitment and sportsmanship, but extremely rewarding!” they said.

Azhar Adam, and his colleague Shannil Varma, who drew up ‘Da Crew Challenge’ share a passion for dance.

Youth platform

They said the competition is a new platform for the youth.

“This idea for the competition came when we realised that the High School youth do not have a platform to showcase their talent. The tagline for this contest is, Dance to express, not to impress,’ since we hope to bring the best talent to the stage,” they said.

Azhar, a popular dancer, producer and director, said that the aim to express has been the main feature of his shows.

“Dance competitions motivated and encouraged me to do something special for our young men and women. ‘Da Crew Challenge’ is about groups competing as crews. The onus is on the performing teams and they will be judged accordingly,” he said.
