New Zealand Indians plan festivities

Venkat Raman-

Indians in India and the Indian Diaspora the world over will mark India’s Independence Day on August 15, 2015.

Vayalar Ravi, a federal Minister from 2004 to 2014 said this is a proud moment for India.

“The ‘external world’ has recognised our country’s progress in science, space, political unity, economic growth and in nation building. India’s strive towards eradication of poverty and promoting literacy among its population have also been recognised and appreciated.”

He said that the world is also recognising the rise of India as a great giant of Asia.

Paying tributes to the people of Indian origin in New Zealand, Mr Ravi said that the early settlers in New Zealand had to struggle, suffering colonisation, discrimination and a number of other challenges.

“We are proud of their record. Indians are known as hard working, law abiding, dedicated and non-interfering people. It is a matter of pride that they are recognised and respected for their good attributes,” he said.

A growing Continent

“Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of our nation stood for nonviolence, love for each other and tolerance for others’ culture, religion and language. Today India is not a country but a continent. It is the largest democracy in the world and promotes the vision of the Mahatma,” he said.

Ministers of the Crown, Members of Parliament Phil Goff, David Shearer, Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi, Dr Parmjeet Parmar, Indian High Commission Counsellor and Head of Chancery Sandeep Sood and many others will participate in a number of activities to commemorate the 68th Anniversary of India’s Independence on August 15.

In Wellington, Mr Sood, who is currently Charge de Affaires, will lead the celebrations with a flag hoisting ceremony at 1030 am at Bharat Bhavan, 45 Kemp Street, Kilbirnie and read out the speech to the Indian Nation by President Pranab Mukherjee. This will be followed by rendition of patriotic songs by the members of the Indian community.

Auckland Indian Association

The Auckland Indian Association has organised jointly with the New Zealand Indian Central Association (NZICA), an impressive function at the Mahatma Gandhi Centre at 145 New North Road, Mt Eden on August 15 at 1030 am.

The programme will commence with a flag-hoisting ceremony and salutations at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. This will be followed by a cultural programme and light refreshments, a notification issued by NZICA General Secretary Prakash Biradar said.

On behalf of the management and staff of Indian Newslink, we offer our tribute to the people of India, who have remained strong as a democracy despite facing several challenges to its security and safety. As the largest democracy in the world, the country has safeguarded its democratic principles without allowing decisive forces to make a foray into the unity of India.
