No greater sorrow than to recall happiness

In about a week from now, we will be in Chennai to attend a Service to commemorate the First Anniversary of the death of Wenceslaus Anthony. Fifty weeks have gone since his passing and most of us are yet to reconcile to the harsh reality.

Mr Anthony was associated with a number of professional and social welfare organisations and his contributions to the business community are well documented and recognised, the foremost of which was his appointment as a ‘Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit’ by Her Majesty the Queen on her New Year’s Honours List on January 1, 2014.

As a columnist for Indian Newslink, he shared his values and beliefs with more than 100,000 readers of its print and web editions every fortnight. His passion for the human cause encouraged us to establish the ‘Indian Newslink Community Fund’ with him as Chairman.

The fact that Mr Anthony touched hearts of people was evidenced by hundreds of messages and text messages posted on our three Web Editions and Facebook pages.

Many called us to express their condolences, with a request to convey them to his grieving family. Among them was former Governor General Sir Anand Satyanand.

He said, “Wenceslaus Anthony packed a great many things into less than 20 years of life in New Zealand, achieving success in business in a personal as well as corporate sense, maintaining an active community life and contributing to a strongly committed family. Alongside respected leadership of the India New Zealand Business Council, and the local operation of the Bank of Baroda, he had built and operated a successful logistics company.  As an active Catholic church contributor, he recently received an unusual Papal honour.”

We pay a tearful tribute to a close friend in a Special Feature under Communitylink.
