Online magazines add to reading pleasure on board

If you want to read The Economist, Bloomberg Businessweek, Wall Street Journal Magazine, Prestige or Elle while on board Singapore Airlines, you do not have to walk up to the magazine rack or seek the assistance of a flight attendant.

You could read any or all of these publications at the flick of a button.

The airline has added value to its award-winning ‘KrisWorld,’ the in-flight entertainment system with the addition of the E-Magazine Library, available in its Airbus 380 and Boeing 777-300 ER fleet that are equipped with the latest Panasonic eX2 in-flight entertainment system.

Senior Vice President (Product & Services) Tan Pee Teck said Singapore Airlines will soon extend the facility to several other international and local publications, e-newspapers and e-books.

The online feature will be progressively introduced on Airbus A330-300 and A340-500 fleet of the airline, he said.

Mr Teck said the electronic format was on trail with three in-house publications of the Airline since July 2010. These included SilverKris, KrisShop and KrisWorld, respectively the carrier’s travel magazine, in-flight sales catalogue and in-flight entertainment guide.

Prestigious Titles

“Following the successful trial, we are now able to move to the next phase and offer electronic versions of prestigious international publications as an added choice to our in-flight selection. With this new electronic initiative, customers of Singapore Airlines will be able to enjoy the pleasure of reading 20 magazine titles in high resolution from the comfort of their seats, with more to come shortly,” he said.

Singapore Airlines has partnered with SmarttPapers Aviation Pte Limited, a privately held Singapore-based company to launch this new in-flight service.

The new application uses a patented file compression technology to compress and transform magazines and newspaper contents into a digital format for integration into the in-flight entertainment system.

“The new e-Magazine initiative offers features such as keyword search, personalised font size, auto-scrolling and different zooming levels to aid reading.

“Better yet, passengers will be able to see more information of a certain destination while reading a relevant article,” Mr Teck said.

While the launch of the electronic versions of the popular magazines is in line with Singapore Airlines’ drive towards environmentally friendly operations, passengers will continue to have the option of reading hard copies of these publications carried on board, along with many other newspapers, magazines and other reading material.

About KrisWorld

KrisWorld offers more than 1000 on-demand entertainment and information options, greater interactivity, as well as features never before seen in previous in-flight entertainment systems.

All programmes are presented on high-resolution wide-screen LCD TVs with crystal-clear audio across all classes in the Airline’s new Airbus A380, Airbus A330, Airbus A340-500 and Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.

The extensive selection includes more movies, TV programmes, interactive games, audio CDs and hosted radio programmes, as well as a variety of learning applications. With an enhanced new graphical user interface, navigating through programmes and menus is a breeze. Customers can play, pause, rewind and resume at their convenience at any point of a video or audio programme.
