Percussion artiste readies for vocal concert

Experienced musicians and upcoming artistes would instantly remember and revere the names of Palgat Raghu, Dr T K Murthy, Umayalpuram Sivaraman, whose expertise in Mridangam has held audiences in awe all over the world.

Their disciple Abhishek Raghuram has not only mastered the percussion instrument but also earned a name for himself as a good vocalist in Carnatic music under the tutelage of P S Narayanaswamy, another great artiste singer.

Abhishek will perform in Auckland on March 23 at a concert organised by the New Zealand Carnatic Music Society at Mt Roskill Intermediate School on Denbigh Avenue in Mt Roskill.

The programme, tickets for which are now on sale, will begin at 5 pm.

Vittal Ramamoorthy and Neyveli Narayanan will accompany him respectively on Violin and Mridangam.

As the grandson of Palgat Raghu, Abhishek showed natural talent as Mridangam artiste at a young age, and won a gold medal at the ‘Mazhalai Medhai’ (Child Genius) contest of popular Tamil weekly ‘Ananda Vikatan,’ when he was just seven years old.

Awards and citations have followed him since then.

Two years later (in 1994), he commenced his journey as a vocalist, performing at several centres in India, Europe, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Further details can be obtained from Malathi Vasudevan on 021-942699.
