Popular dancer turns on Bollywood heat

Directors, teachers and students of ‘Indiance,’ one of the most professionally run Bollywood dance schools in the country were awe-struck by the visit of a popular dancer from Mumbai recently.

Urvashi Gandhi, who became famous as a finalist in Season 3 of ‘Dance India Dance,’ a reality show telecast on Zee Television, was in Auckland to share her knowledge and experience with the local artistes.

She also conducted workshops for the group, which is rigorously rehearsing their forthcoming production.

Called, ‘Bombay Beat, Bollywood Heat,’ the programme will feature the world’s first 360° stage at the Vodafone Events Centre (formerly Telstra Clear Pacific Events Centre) on Saturday July 27, 2013.

Tickets for the show, commencing at 730 pm, can be booked through TicketDirect.

Significant visit

Indiance Director Akshita Nama said that the visit of Urvashi was an important event for Indiance and that the email that preceded her visit was a pleasant surprise.

“We could not believe that she was coming to visit us and spend some time with our students. It looked as if our little school is now receiving international exposure. It was great not only for Indiance but also for the Bollywood enthusiasts in New Zealand,” Indiance Director Akshita Nama said.

Auckland is a multicultural city with many people experiencing and enjoying the foods, flavours and entertainment of other cultures. By inviting people like Urvashi, this experience can be strengthened, spread and enjoyed.

Method in madness

Akshita discussed a number of issues with Urvashi following her workshops.

“Bollywood is madness, but there should be a method to madness. While it is an amalgamation of different dance forms, Bollywood also has its own dance form. It can be recognised just as easily as Ballet, Jazz or Ballroom Dancing,” Urvashi said.

With 10 years of experience in Indian Classical dance training and about five years of training in Latin Ballroom, Urvashi seeks inspiration from everywhere.

“Bollywood is always there, it is in our blood,” she said.

Urvashi said that she was impressed with the standard of learning and teaching at Indiance and the professional calibre of its students.

“Indiance has taken so much of their energy and effort into promoting Bollywood and Indian culture,” she said.

Akshita said her Dance School had always aimed to promote both.

“Some children have a good start from their formative years and they get good training and experience at Indiance. Even a little exposure can lead to greater interest and love for our wonderful culture,” she said.

Born and raised in a family of medical practitioners, Urvashi gave vent to her passion in dance, preferring the title of ‘Dancer’ to ‘Doctor.’ Urvashi teaches various dance styles including Bollywood, Hip Hop, Contemporary, Broadway Jazz, Jive, Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba and Waltz form two schools located in Bandra and Juhu in Mumbai.

She was impressed when she saw a rehearsal of ‘Bombay Beat, Bollywood Heat.’

“It is a superb idea. When you have a stage that is 360°, you can do so many amazing things. Usually, all stage shows are of single dimension, where you dance facing only one direction. Here people get to see dances from all sides. I believe this would be the first of its type in the world,” she said.

“Vegas shows were not built in a day, but with the support of people they were able to become world famous shows. As a dance enthusiast and from an Indian background, I hope that New Zealanders would support Indiance because I think they are onto something beautiful,” she added.

Urvashi hoped to return to New Zealand to watch the forthcoming show.
