Postgraduates enjoy better lifestyle: Study

People with postgraduate qualifications enjoy a higher standard of living, with better pay and perquisites compared to those with lesser qualifications, according to a recent Study.

According to an Education Ministry Report, people completing one-year postgraduate qualifications earned about 16% more than those with a Bachelor’s Degree in the first year after study, and 9% higher after three years.

The Report said that studies in New Zealand, UK and US showed that people with higher qualifications tend to enjoy more and better, employment opportunities.

The Times Higher Education magazine in London recently published the findings of a research, which said those with higher degrees commanded higher salaries than those with lesser qualifications.

It attributed the change to the growth of technology in today’s workplace, in particular the increasingly sophisticated use of computers and the skills required.

AUT Associate Professor Dr Tony Clear, who is also Associate Head of School (Computing & Mathematical Sciences) said a number of new roles have recently been added to the traditional IT services.

“These include enterprise architect, application architect, software engineer, service designer, capacity planner, storage and data architects and cloud computing system administrator,” he said.

Dr Clear said AUT’s Master of Service-Oriented Computing aimed to produce professionals with the skills to serve the latest trends in computing where computing is delivered as a service, on demand, globally available and ready to scale as the needs of workplaces grow.

Associate Professor for Postgraduate Studies Marion Jones said that the Institution’s Manukau Campus was poised for postgraduate study.

“We are already looking to 2020 in terms of our academic planning and examine how postgraduate research can reach out to people and bring benefits to the community,” she said.

AUT University’s Manukau campus is offering a range of new postgraduate programmes at the two-year old campus from 2012.

The Campus currently offers postgraduate qualifications in computing, child health, physical activity and nutrition, arts, and education.

“Postgraduate study can be stair-cased from a Postgraduate Certificate through to Diploma and Masters Degrees and Doctorates.

“Indian communities in South & East Auckland now have greater opportunities to boost their earning potential with postgraduate study programmes moving closer to home,” Professor Jones said.
