Programme to mark Elder Abuse Awareness day

The importance of caring for the elder members of the society and protect them from mental, verbal and physical abuse would be the highlight of the ‘Elder Abuse Awareness Day’ on June 15, designated by International Network for Prevention of Elder Abuse in 2006.

Since then, a number of organisations have been marking the Day with programmes dedicated to seniors.

Among them is the Auckland based Shanti Niwas Charitable Trust.

Project Manager Nilima Venkat said that a growing number of elders in the community suffer abuse at home and in the society.

“This is a hidden issue and most victims do not discuss their sufferings either in private or in public due to a number of factors including shame, guilt, family pressure and loss of confidence. These victims are also susceptible to health and mental problems. There is therefore a need to address these issues,” she said.

According to her, people migrating to New Zealand in the evening of their life often face several challenges, including culture shock, communication, generation gap and dependence.

“These migrants are left alone at home the whole day as their sons, daughters or grandchildren attend offices or educational institutions. Seniors feel neglected and insecure and are afraid to express their feelings to anyone in the community, resulting in increased family conflict.

“This stress and tension can then lead to verbal, physical and emotional financial abuse and neglect,” she said.

Ms Venkat said that since its establishment in 1994, Shanti Niwas has been providing the right environment and programmes throughout the years to help elders meet, share memories, food and laughter.

“We welcome seniors and their families to talk to us about their problems in confidence. We are concerned about the welfare of these people,” she said.

She said Shanti Niwas will observe the ‘Elder Abuse Awareness Day’ at its premises in Onehunga (14 Spring Street) on June 15 from 11 am to 130 pm.

“The programme is free and open to all,” she said.
