Ethics and business in parallel to sport was the main focus at a meeting held in Auckland on Wednesday, May 23, 2018.

Organised by the New Zealand India Trade Alliance (NZITA), the event, in a series called, ‘Reimagining India New Zealand Relationship,’ was held in partnership with PricewaterhouseCoopers at their premises on Quay Street in Auckland City.

‘Cricket and Business Ethics,’ was the subject of discussion.

Booming Cricket Economy

New Zealand Cricket Players Association (NZPA) Chief Executive Heath Mills talked about the booming cricket economy in India and how it can be beneficial to the relationship between India and New Zealand.

“This booming economy presents a gamut of opportunities, which New Zealand should harness and work to its advantage,” he said.

Talking from experience of spending time on the ground and building relationships before starting to do business in India, Geoff Allott, Businessman and a former member of the Black Caps, said that India has recorded many improvements the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Ease of Business

“Among them is the ease of doing business, which is vital for foreign investors and companies establishing a commercial presence in India. Introduction of GST has made the taxation system more consistent for exporters,” he said.

Mr Allott said that exporting to India has become easier with corruption giving way to less paper work and more understanding customs staff.

“New Zealand must recognise the existing and emerging opportunities in India,” he said.

Citing the example of his own business, Mr Allott highlighted the increase in demand for products that had traceability, nutritional value and sustainability in the Indian market.

Research important

Nadine Turley, who pioneered the New Zealand Pipfruit into India, emphasised the importance of conducting a thorough research in the Indian market before setting up a business.

She also highlighted the need to be honest and the importance of understanding your target audience.

All three speakers stressed the importance of building relationships and leveraging the natural rapport that India shares with New Zealand.

They also focused on the need for Kiwi-style tenacity in the face of ethical challenges.
