Rewa does the hat trick at IDC

The great Savusavu team, which ruled the roost at the turn of the Century, has had four IDC wins so far, with two back-to-back victories.

Since coming under a new administration five years ago, the team has achieved a remarkable record, winning the Fiji Fact and Battle of the Giants each twice and now the IDC title three times in a row.

The Tavua players, comprising another high profile and consistent team, also managed two consecutive IDC victories.

Rewa chairman Iliyas Daud attributed the success to the players.

“They make our work as officials very easy. If I did not have these players, it may not have been possible to achieve such a remarkable feat,” he said.

According to Mr Daud, his job was to lead the highly disciplined and motivated team of players and use his ‘limited knowledge of soccer” to recruit the right persons and place them in the right position.

“This formula has worked well. We try to outthink the opposition and one thing that we did three years ago was to recruit a professional coach,” he said.

The Premier Division final was played between Kadavu and Nadogo. Kadavu deposed of Hamilton Nadroga in one semi-final while Nadogo saw off a strong Bua challenge. A penalty in the final stages of the match and a red card to the Nadogo captain separated the two very evenly matched teams.

The rivalry in the Premier Division is hotting up with Nadogo vowing to stop Kadavu on all accounts in the Fiji Fact tournament.

While Rewa had people with strong coaching backgrounds and soccer knowledge, the team opted for greater expertise and recruited Micky Byrne to help team.

He said Micky has been with Rewa to guide it through all three IDC victories.

“He brings to Rewa a tactical eye and invaluable football experience. Micky has given us the edge over other teams.”

The 17th NZFAFC had the privilege of the participation of strong teams.

With the advent of the ‘Two Division System,’ this year, all games were evenly matched, with the Premier Division and the Super Premier Division each accounting for 10 teams.

Under the new ‘Points System,’ Promotion Relegation was interesting.

The points allocated are as follows: Super Premier Rewa 10, Tavua 8, Nasinu 6, Lautoka, 6, Navua 4, Ba 4, Nadroga 2, Nadi 2, Savusavu 0 and Vatukoula 0.

Under this new system, the Promotion Relegation would be between Savusavu, Vatukoula and Kadavu.

However all teams have opportunity to improve their soccer prowess and compete in Fiji Fact later this month.

Editor’s Note: We do not agree that Mr Daud has limited knowledge of Soccer. He has been a veteran in the field and no one could argue that he has been the strongest advocate of a United Front to offer the soccer-mad Indo-Fijian community quality tournaments over the years. We believe that he should be recognised and suitably honoured in the near future by the professional soccer community. *
