Rotarians launch new project

The Rotary Club of Auckland Harbourside has announced the launch of a new project to promote safety and wellbeing in the South Pacific.

Called, ‘Burn Prevention Education Programme,’ the project would be implemented over the next three years and would entail at least US$ 20,000.

Announcing the project at the Diwali Festival held at Alexandra Park in Greenlane on November 17, 2012, President Shefali Mehta said her Club aimed to advance its mission and make a difference in the lives of people.

“We have seen many lives changed for the better. Our main focus is to support the Rotary Foundation, including various New Generations Youth Projects and the Southern Cross School in South Auckland,” she said.

She said that the theme for her Club during Rotary Year 2012-2013 is ‘Peace through Service.’

Tertiary Education Minister Stephen Joyce, Indian High Commissioner Avanindra Kumar Pandey, Cuban Ambassador Maria del Carmen Herrera Caseiro, National MP Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi, Rotary District Governor Ron Seeto were among the main guests at the event.

Ms Mehta said that Diwali and Chinese New Year were among the two fundraising dinners organised by the Club every year.

“The money raised at this year’s Diwali Festival will be donated to the Starship Foundation Cancer & Blood Unit and the Foundation for the Education of Needy Children (Fenc) Fiji Trust,” she said.

Variety entertainment formed a part of the Festival.
