Rugby League contest for Indians

Kasey King –

Younger members of the Indian community keen on Rugby League will find a contest later this month interesting.

Organised by the Counties Manukau Zone of the New Zealand Rugby League, the one-day event, called, ‘Have a Go Day,’ will be held in Murphy Park located on Avenue Road, Otahuhu, Auckland on Sunday, July 24, 2016.

The players will be divided into three divisions- Mini (for boys and girls aged 5-12 years); Junior (for young men in 13-17 years) and Senior (for men who are 18 years and above) and the games will be played from 930 am to 1230 pm.

Ethnic event

New Zealand Rugby League Counties Manukau Zone General Manager Kasey King said that the forthcoming event has been designed as an Ethic Rugby League Competition for Indian and Asian communities.

“We would not have any full contact Rugby League matches played but there will be some fun activities for children and adults to test their skills and ultimately register for this year’s competition. Rugby League is not commonly played amongst these communities so this competition allows skill development to happen in a fun, safe environment,” she said.

Ms King said that the ‘Indian & Asian Rugby League’ was established in 2013 to encourage members of these communities to play Rugby League.

She said that the ‘Indian & Asian Rugby League’ currently has more than 135 players.
