Shanti Niwas volunteers honoured

Volunteers of Shanti Niwas Charitable Trust were among those honoured at the recently held Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board Community Awards.

Among them were Pushpa Prasad and Pervin Iswar.

Shanti Niwas was also recognised for its services with a Community Group Award.

Project Manager Nilima Venkat said that the Award was for providing opportunities for volunteerism and creating enjoyable and meaningful volunteer roles.

“Volunteers are the backbone of our organisation. They give their time generously, assisting us with various chores, which help us to run the Trust activities and services efficiently,” she said.

Mrs Venkat said that the Trust accounts for about 25 volunteers every year and that they assist in a number of areas including administration, transport, organising various activities and in the kitchen.

“They inspire others through their selfless service and leadership qualities. Together, we are able to play a small part in increasing social cohesion to create a society that is inclusive of older people,” she said.
