Show in aid of Starship Hospital

Just like her profession (accounting) and her company (Barfoot & Thompson), Priya Shankar does not leave anything to chance. From ensuring proper training of artistes to the need for an ID to purchase drinks at the cash counter, she has worked out details of a forthcoming event in Auckland.

Priya is the energy behind ‘A Bollywood Party,’ scheduled to be held on Saturday, September 13 at 730 pm at the Auckland Deaf Society (164 Balmoral Road, Mt Eden).

The annual event challenges Barfoot & Thompson staff to raise money for the Starship Foundation.

“In 2012 we raised $130,000 for six incubators and in 2013, we collected $200,000 to buy two new ventilators and refurbish the Child and Family Unit Garden for mental health patients and their families. The target for 2014 is $150,000 for purchase of two important pieces of breathing and resuscitation equipment,” Priya said.

“This programme will feature ‘Nasha,’ one of Auckland’s top Indian bands with performances by many local artists. Tickets to event held last year sold out 10 days prior to the show and over $6000 was raised for Starship. We are hoping to surpass the amount this year. There will be many door prizes and giveaways. It is also a great way to promote local talent within Auckland,” Priya said.

Vital equipment

Starship needs Video Laryngoscope, equipment that provides a clear picture of the vocal chords when inserting breathing tubes through the mouth, facilitating less traumatic and more efficient procedure system for both patients and doctors.

The addition of the video screen enables trainee doctors to be easily guided by senior doctors when performing the procedure resulting in a more efficient training system for Starship Hospital.

The Starship Emergency Department has a number of resuscitations daily and currently these events are not able to be reviewed in detail.

The Resuscitation Video System enables clinicians to analyse resuscitations and apply their findings for team enhancement and procedure development.
