Special significance for the community

It is that time of the year again when Indians across New Zealand and around the world are in ‘Diwali Mode.’

Diwali or Deepawali symbolises lighting of small clay lamps (diyas) to celebrate the victory of good over evil and light over darkness.

The festival of light carries a special significance for our community, providing us an opportunity to come together and enjoy our richness and diversity.

Diwali also provides us with an opportunity to share our joy and happiness with our friends from different cultures, and bring a little Indian-flavour to our communities in New Zealand.

It is the time of the year when families and friends gather for celebrations.

Diwali in New Zealand is a shining example of how the diaspora of our culture brings happiness to all.

Spreading warmth

For me, Diwali signifies warmth and brightness; everything has a special glow, and hearts are full of cheer.

When we live away from our homeland, Diwali carries extra significance.

Aside from being an event where we reflect on our achievements and plan for our future, it is also a chance for all of us to look back on our contributions to our adopted motherland, New Zealand.

It is an opportunity to share our culture but continue to learn more about the culture and values of New Zealanders.

As a National Member of Parliament I am working tirelessly with the Prime Minister and my colleagues to address the issues that matter to our Indian community.

The challenges

I deeply understand the importance of healthcare and support for our elders, children and everyone in the community.

I understand that one of the reasons we have migrated here is to achieve greater career opportunities and to participate in a growing economy.

I also understand the value of education, and ensuring that our children are well prepared for the future.

We are working diligently on each of these issues to ensure that New Zealand continues to be a fantastic place to live, work and raise a family.

As all of us celebrate this occasion, I wish that Diwali brings to you some of the brightest and best moments that you have all desired.

May your family and you share boundless love and laughter and may the diyas illuminate your life with bright sparkles of peace and happiness.
