“Strongest Ethnic team ever” says Labour MP

Michael Wood

Wellington, May 2, 2017

The Labour Party is proud to be fielding its strongest ever team of candidates from New Zealand’s Ethnic Communities.

Our list reflects the diversity of New Zealand in 2017, with talented men and women from an array of Ethnic Communities well represented.

By drawing from the fullest possible spectrum of communities, our Party List not only reflects the New Zealand population (over 25 percent of whom were born overseas), but it is stronger as a result. New Zealand is one of the most successful multi-cultural societies in the world, and the knowledge that we gain from listening to one another opens up new opportunities and helps us to make wiser decisions. The next Labour caucus and government will be stronger because of our diverse List.

New Zealand’s diversity is one of our strengths, but we also know that people from every background look for similar things in life – a decent place to live, good education for their children, opportunities to apply their skills and talents, and to be respected. Labour is the party that has always stood for a fair shot for everyone, regardless of their background. With a strong and diverse Party List, we look forward to running a strong campaign and delivering for all New Zealanders as the next government.

Priyanca Radhakrishnan

Priyanca Radhakrishnan, who is ranked 11 on the List – a sure win- issued the following statement this morning:

We do not believe in just ticking the boxes – instead we have gone out and engaged with Ethnic Communities, developed relationships and identified high quality candidates who bring strong skill-sets and unique perspectives to our List.

Labour values our diverse ethnic communities.

We have a strong and representative List, we are developing forward-looking policy to ensure that people from all our communities can reach their full potential in life.

Through our engagement with a wide cross-section of people, we have a good understanding of the issues that our important to our ethnic communities and we will be working hard to address them.

In addition to a strong position on the Party list, I am honoured that the Party saw it fit to select me for the Maungakiekie electorate seat, which is a winnable seat for Labour. Selecting an ethnic candidate for a winnable seat is extremely rare and I see my selection as a sign of Labour’s confidence in ethnic candidates and commitment to encourage political participation within ethnic communities.

Editor’s Note: Michael Wood was elected to Parliament from Mt Roskill at the by-election held on December 3, 2016. He is Labour Party’s Spokesman for Ethnic Communities.

Priyanca Radhakrishnan is the Labour Party Multi-Ethnic Sector Chairperson.
