Students speak against racism with passion

Indian Newslink is at the Annual Race Unity Speech Awards which has just commenced at Te Mahurehure Marae in Pt Chevalier, Auckland.
Senior High school students from various part of New Zealand are here to contest at the finals of the Speech Awards, which this year mark the 20th anniversary of Hedi Moani, an Iran-born member of the Baha’i faith, who was known for his passion for race relations, oratory and youth.

About the Speech Awards
Aidan MacLeod of the New Zealand Baha’i Community said that the Speech Contrst and Awards combine racial unity in a powerful way.
The New Zealand Baha’i Community established the Race Unity Speech Awards in 2001 as a contribution towards addressing prejudice. Since then, the Speech Awards have grown to include regional forums across the country.

The National Final of the Speech Awards tonight has brought together speakers from these regional forums.

A panel of all-women judges including Waitemata District Police District Commander Tusha Penny, Race Relations Commissioner Dame Susan Devoy, Labour MP Priyanca Radhakrishnan, Speech Communication Association Director Barbara Lauernson and AUT Director of Diversity Edwina Pio is judging the contestants.

Young orator Naomi Simon-Kumar is the Master of Ceremonies.
