Taiwan rushes aid to Katahmandu

Three emergency assistance teams from the Republic of China (Taiwan) reached Nepal on April 28 and 29 and launched immediately earthquake relief assessment and aid operations.ROC Representative to India Tien Chung-kwang, who is coordinating Taiwan’s relief efforts in Kathmandu, conferred with a 15-member team from the Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation including four doctors, which also arrived on April 28 with 1.3  tons of medical and other emergency supplies.

Specialists help

A Taiwan International Health Action (TIHA) team with six medical specialists, led by a Ministry of Health and Welfare official and accompanied by two Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials familiar with the situation in Nepal, landed in Kathmandu on April 29. TIHA oversees emergency humanitarian medical aid provided by the Republic of China.A composite group from the International Headquarters Search and Rescue, Taiwan; Buddha’s Light International Association ROC; the Red Cross Society of the ROC; and Chang Gung Memorial Hospital also arrived the same day, with five tons of relief supplies to follow shortly, including medicines, tents, blankets, and dried food.Upon arrival in Nepal, members of the three teams joined in quake relief efforts.Representative Tien and other officials are assisting ROC citizens in Nepal, coordinating aid logistics, and maintaining close contact with relevant Nepali agencies.

The Taipei Economic and Cultural Center in India remains in close communication with the Nepali embassy in India to provide further relief assistance as needed.While Taiwan’s relief efforts have been hampered by the lack of direct flights to Nepal and an air traffic overload at airports there, the government and private sector are working together closely to provide all possible aid. The ROC government announced a donation of US$300,000 soon after the massive earthquake devastated Nepal on April 25, 2015.
