The spirit of New Zealand on canvas

A collection of paintings in acrylic on canvas, intriguing story-installations, sketches and cartoons will go on display in Tauranga later this month,

It will feature the works of Lipika Sen and Prabhjyot Majithia, under the theme, ‘Inhaling the Spirit: New Zealand,’ with an official opening scheduled to begin at 5 pm on June 27 at ‘Creative Tauranga.’

The Exhibition will be open to public from Monday to Friday (9 am to 5 pm) and on Saturdays (10 am to 4 pm) from June 28 to July 16, 2013 at the same venue.

A compelling collection of paintings of the two artists, first shown at the New Zealand High Commission in New Delhi, was described by the then High Commissioner Rupert Holborow as “stunning, strong and edgy.’

The Exhibition is reported to have earned the attention of art patrons, artists, diplomats, professionals and industry leaders from various countries.

Chance encounter

Following is a report sent by Lipika:

“Some years ago, we were on a tiki-tour of New Zealand, in a Cherokee. Up and down the coasts, covered in sand and immersed in ocean, we wandered inadvertently into a quaint art shop, down a wet cobbled alley, in the ethereal haze of drizzly Arrowtown.

“She was waiting for us on the bottom shelf, invisible, yet yearning to reveal herself. She emerged from the first canvas one evening – the muse of our own creation. Wielding the powers of a sorceress, she released our souls that now dance to her commands. She led us gently into the freedom of a new found world; a world that she unleashed from within us; a world that she began by being born in paint.

“She comes to life and brings her land and her people: The Mystic, The Protector, Floating City, Waka, Surf Girl, Wine Lady, Auckland by Dusk, God of the Forest, Preciousa. A whole new Universe conjures up before us, her magic flowing in our veins forever.”
