The zing has gone but LP music lives on

Await an evening of melody with Swar Sadhana Academy of Music

Venkat Raman –

Two years ago, during an interview with Press Trust of India (PTI) Pyarelal of Laxmikant Pyarelal fame said that the work environment and ethics have undergone significant changes in the Hindi music industry.

“When we used to work, about 200 musicians worked at a time, but it is now all done on sophisticated equipment – somehow that zing thing is missing. But I don’t say it is bad. I am ready to compose music for a Bollywood film if a producer or a filmmaker comes with a good offer,” he said.

Interesting interview

For a veteran like him, who has worked with such actors of calibre as Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor and Dharmendra, today’s studios would certainly be unsuitable.

“Producers today ask me to compose for one or two songs. This may be the trend but I will not take up an offer unless I do all the songs in a film,” he said.

Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar has also often mourned over the status of music in the modern film.

“We have had music composers of great talent like Laxmikant Pyarelal,” she said.

When he was 12 years old, Pyarelal was keen to go to Vienna to become a trained violinist but destiny and his childhood friend changed his plans.

Shankar-Jaikishan, who were the rage of the Hindi cinema from 1950s through to 1970s, inspired this duo. Laxmikant would mimic Jaikishan with an upturned collar, wearing his metal watchstrap loose.

The industry was surprised when LP earned the Filmfare Award for Dosti (1964), over the highly expected ‘Sangam’ released the same year.
