Thieves target gold at homes

Members of the ethnic communities in general and those of Indian origin in particular must take minimum steps necessary to protect their gold jewellery and other precious items a police officer has said.

Waitakere Police Ethnic People’s Community Relations Officer Constable Wells Albert said that gold in any form would be an invitation to unwanted characters like thieves.

“The price of gold has doubled over the past ten years and continues to rise to record highs. Many nationals within the wider ethnic community invest heavily in gold and purchase items of high value such as 24 carat gold rings, bracelets, necklaces, chains and other precious ornaments,” he said.

According to him, the Police recently investigated several burglaries in West Auckland and found that some residents had lost 24-carat gold items.

“There are a number ways in which the ethnic communities can protect their valuables. These include records of digital images and documents of all identified items including receipts and serial numbers,” Constable Albert said.
