Time to remove MMP wrinkles

The Mixed Member Proportional System of election of Members of Parliament is best suited for the country but if necessary, it can be tweaked to near-perfection, a prominent supporter has said.

Sandra Grey, a spokesperson for the ‘Campaign to Keep MMP,’ said that voters would participate in a referendum, which will be held as a part of the General Election on November 26.

“If a majority of voters opted to retain MMP, it would lock in an independent review by the Electoral Commission to hear from the public about improvements that can be made to our current system,” she said.

While a number of experts have suggested that the current MMP system should be retained, many others were of the view that it could be modified to reflect the changing needs of the country, she said.

“We know that aspects of MMP irk some people, who otherwise broadly support a voting system where everyone’s votes count equally, no matter where they live. It is important that not only supporters of MMP but also supporters of the System with some tweaks, vote to retain it this November. This will allow us to take a close look about how we can improve MMP, but not throw the baby out with the bathwater,” Ms Grey said.

All political parties voted in Parliament for the review of the System and included public comment on issues such as the current thresholds to get into Parliament and dual candidacy (Electorate and List).

Ms Grey said the referendum enjoyed universal support and that it was time to iron out wrinkles in the MMP System.

“MPs would have the final say on the details of any voting system. The legislated review gives us the best chance of keeping the power of our votes and making this even stronger.

“Recent polling has indicated support among backers of MMP and a modified combined support of 60% for existing and modified MMP,” she said.
