The participation and support of the Vanua was instrumental in the success of Yellow Ribbon Project of the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS).
Launched in 2008, the Programme encourages communities to give a second chance to offenders after their release from prison.
FCS Western Division Supervisor Oliver Fisher said the aim was to successfully reintegrate offenders back into society and their families.
“When a prisoner is released into the community, there is resentment, distrust, discrimination, stigmatisation and victimisation. This attitude must change. The offenders must realise their full potential and become productive members of the society. We have to change our thinking from negativity hope,” he added.
Nadi Chamber of Commerce President Doctor Ram Raju said the Chamber was ready to discuss ways of assisting the ex-offenders.
He said crime affected the business community and families.
“You can be the next victim. It is important to support this project if we do not want offenders returning to the vicious cycle of crime. The project aims at a safer and more secure society for our children and businesses,” he said.
Tui Nawaka Ratu Manasa Naevo launched the Programme, unveiling the Yellow Ribbon logo and cutting a special cake.
Members of the Fiji Corrections Service, business stakeholders and members of the community marched through Nadi Town to mark the occasion.
Special Administrator Nadi and Sigatoka Aisea Tuidraki said he was pleased to see the support from the community for this initiative.
“We still have a long way to go, but this is a good start and I am happy to see the strong support of the Nadi community. I am sure that with increased awareness, this Yellow Ribbon Project will receive stronger support,” he said.
