You could keep your own books

I refer to an article by Abdul Rafik of Inland Revenue Department in Indian Newslink (July 15, 2011) regarding tax returns and would like to know more relating to my situation.

I am self-employed, doing taxi driving as a sole trader (owner and operator). Do I have to appoint an accountant? I do my own bookkeeping and would like to file my own tax return. Does the IRD provide any assistance?

Abdul Rafik responds:

You do not have to engage an accountant. If you can do your own bookkeeping, then you are welcome to file your tax returns yourself. However, many self- employed engage an accountant to ensure that you meet your tax obligations correctly, and claim your full entitlements.

An important part of Inland Revenue’s compliance approach is to make it as easy as possible for our customers to comply.

Our website (www.ird.govt.nz) has a full range of tools, calculators and information to help you manage your taxes. Search for the ‘Tool for business,’ which has useful information for business people.

If you would like to talk to us face-to-face, join us at one of our free tax seminars or workshops, held throughout the country.

Visit our website and enter the term ‘Seminars’ in the Search function. Your will find that we can help you with GST, employer obligations and filing your returns.

You can also phone us or make an appointment to meet us online (‘Contact Us’).
