Young achiever lifts High School spirit

Manurewa High School in South Auckland has been in the news lately for all the right reasons, bringing joy and pride to its board of trustees, management, teachers, staff, parents and students.

Stated to be the largest multicultural school in New Zealand with its student population of 1850 representing at least 40 nationalities, the boys and girls brought home a number of awards in 2013.

Teenage Victor

Among them was Vertivhel Krishnamoorthy, who attained distinction in curricular, extra-curricular and sports, setting individual and school records.

As well as obtaining the highest marks in four of five subjects, namely Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Classics (English Literature), he won the ‘Proximate Accessit Cup’ 2013.

Teacher Vijaya Kumar said that he was extremely pleased of Vetrivhel’s achievements. “He has consistently been a hardworking student and richly deserved the ‘Proximate Accessit Cup.’ I am sure that Vetrivhel will always pursue excellence,” he said.

The teenager’s goal is to become a medical doctor with specialisation in Emergency Medicine, apart from honing his skills as a goalkeeper in Hockey.

A Sound Engineer of all theatre productions at his School for the past three years, he follows a sound philosophy in life: “Give your best and try to be a winner. All winners are best performers.”

Inspiring parents

Vetrivhel, who says that his parents and grandparents are a source of inspiration, is a chip of the old block. His parents Ilango & Sakthi Krishnamoorthy (Directors of Mercury Printz and Iris Signs Limited) are known for their qualities of honesty, compassion and pursuit of perfection.

Manurewa High School Principal Salvatore Gargiulo said that the size and diversity of the institutions benefit students.

“They enjoy being part of a School that always has cause for celebration. We perform with excellence in all aspects – academic, sports, music, arts, dance and drama,” he said.

Other winners

Among the other achievers of the School in 2013 were Head of Physics Fenella Colyer, who won the Prime Minister’s Science Teacher Prize; OHU, the School’s Student Business Enterprise, which won two awards at the Young Enterprise National Awards (Wellington); The Volleyball Team, which won Gold at the North Island Volleyball Championship.
