Young band for 'Music in Parks’

A group of young Indian New Zealanders has bucked the trend of unsavoury competition by coming together to promote music that forms the finer part of Indian life.

Auckland based Tabla teacher and performer who runs the Sargam School of Indian Music in Mt Roskill, has formed Sargam, a fusion band to enable music lovers to enjoy quality entertainment.

The group, comprising Ashish Ramakrishan (Vocalist), Basant Madhur (Tabla), Deepak Madhur (Tabla & Manual Percussions), Hemant Thaker (Keyboard), Moushumi Das (Vocalist), Ravi Nyayapati (Percussions) and Swapnil Gomez (Drums), will perform at the Auckland Domain on March 6 as a part of ‘Music in the Parks,’ of Auckland City Council’s ‘Summer Music Series.’

“We are proud that this would be the first time that an Indian music group will perform at this annual event. The annual series began in January and will run until April, with 20 concerts, each with its own unique ethos,” Basant said.

He said the seven-piece ensemble (Sargam) will effect a fusion of Indian Classical, Contemporary, Bollywood, Sufi and Western music to create an inimitable blend of melody.
