Young creative eyes foster better world vision

Staff Reporter

About 140 children between the age of five and seven received film cameras at a function held at Laingholm Primary School in West Auckland on Friday, May 4, 2018.

They will give vent to their creativity, as participants in the ‘My World, My Vision’ Project.

More than 150 people including former Waitakere Mayor Sir Bob Harvey, who has also served as Chairman of Waterfront Auckland and Champion of Auckland, Laingholm Primary School Principal Martyn Weatherill, internationally-renowned photographer Ashok Kochhar, teachers, parents, photographers, experts, invited guests and students were present at the event.

Nationwide Project

The Programme was the first in the nationwide annual series of ‘My World, My Vision,’ an initiative of Mr Kochhar, which began two years ago on a modest scale in association with Indian Newslink. This year, the Project will cover 400 children (five to 12 years) living in various parts of New Zealand.

They will be encouraged to go out and present the world around them.

The images captured by them will be presented at an exhibition across New Zealand and online, inviting comments from International experts.

Creative Outlet

Mr Kochhar launched the Project in 2016 promising to offer a creative outlet to the thoughts of the young minds.

“After the Auckland Chapter, the exhibition will spread to other cities and cover children from varied ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. The Project would also open many future career possibilities through mentor programmes, online showcases of talent as well as youth symposia,” he said.

Mr Kochhar said that children of yesteryears and youth of today govern every nation, meaning that today’s children will govern and take decisions tomorrow.

“As elders, it is our duty to give our undivided attention to children,” he said.

Suffering generation

But official data reveals that the world is not in a good state as far as teenagers are concerned. There have many channels of information, but not as many sources to express and understand their own thoughts in a constructive manner.

Mr Kochhar said that in a world where our teens are battling depression, bullying and many more evils, an ear given to their thoughts and a hand extended to support their efforts will achieve results in the right direction.

“With the objective of providing a channel of expression to our young minds before the start of their teen years and to enhance their Emotional Quotient (EQ), a team of experts from various genres of visual arts came together to present the initiative, ‘My World, My Vision.’ We invite you to get involved in the initiative,” he said.
