Will he run again for the Mayoralty of Auckland or retire from public service?
Or do something else perhaps?
There is growing speculation about what incumbent Mayor Phil Goff would do but to put the matter to rest, the man himself would front up to the public at a special meeting to be held on Sunday, March 3, 2019 at Mt Albert War Memorial Hall, located at the Corner of Wairere Avenue & New North Road.
The Meeting, scheduled to begin at 230 pm will include cultural performances, speeches and the much-awaited announcement by Mr Goff.
“He should run for the Mayorality again this year. There is plenty of unfinished business and the country’s largest city needs a man like Phil Goff,” someone said, hoping that his words would have the magic effect on the man.
Public Service
Mr Goff is comparatively young – he will turn 66 on June 22 but has had a long career in public life, especially politics. He comes from a poor family and became an active member of the Labour Party in 1969 when he was just 16 years old.
Twelve years later, in 1981, he was elected to Parliament from Mt Roskill, a constituency that he served until 2016 (save for one term of three years from 1996 to 1999, when he was elected from New Lynn). During his long career in politics, he distinguished himself as an honest public servant, a hard-working Minister and more than all a friendly person, accessible to almost everyone who wanted to meet him. He held several cabinet posts including that of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Trade, Minister of Justice and Minister of Defence.
He contested the post of Mayor of Auckland in 2016 and secured the job with 47.3% of the votes (187,622) polled. The next local government elections including that of Mayors will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2019.
