Backline Boys at frontline Soccer

Tavua is the one of the oldest and most successful soccer teams associated with the NZ Fiji AFC.

A group of soccer enthusiasts who migrated from Fiji formed the Club in 1989 and called it ‘Backline Boys.’ This is perhaps the only team that comprises Fijians playing in the local football leagues in the late 1970s.

While a number of officials, players and coaches have come and gone over the past 20 years, Tavua is proud that Bobby Chand, a founding member, has remained committed to promoting the Club. As its President, he inspires officials and players to offer their best and promote professional soccer.

He is ably assisted by Manager Ashwin Choy, Assistant Manager Sanjit Prasad, Coach Dinesh Kumar and Technicians Shafraz Khan and Ashok Kumar.

Tavua is a three-time winner of the IDC tournament, the last of which was in 2007. The Club was a finalist in IDC 2010. It has also won a number of FIJI Fact Tournaments, including a five-in-a-row streak in the first five Fiji FACT tournaments.

Tavua has also been successful in the Battle of Giant tournaments and is the current Champion.

The Team boasts of a number of seasoned players, including Shalen Nair, Vishal Lal, Raj Naidu and Salesh Kumar.

Its younger members are Sandip Singh, Shekhar Prakash, Sumeet Shankaran and Shalvin Prasad.
