Book Club to promote Tamil literature, language and culture

An organisation called, the ‘New Zealand Tamil Book Club’ has been launched to promote Tamil literature, language and culture among the Tamil-speaking population in New Zealand.

An initiative of Christchurch based Jeyamohan and his friends, the New Zealand Tamil Book Club will serve those interested throughout the country.

“The New Zealand Tamil Book Club is an organisation run by volunteers. It will work to promote Tamil reading, writing and speaking among people of Tamil origin in New Zealand. The Organisation runs a library for users to read and use Tamil literary texts,” he said.

He said that the services will be rendered free of cost but appealed to people in the community to donate Tamil books.

Among the titles available is Kalki’s famous novel, Ponniyin Selvan

Virtual Seminar on April 11

The Book Club has scheduled to conduct an online Seminar on Sunday, April 11, 2021 at 230 pm and is open to anyone interested.

“The subject incudes tips to parents on different techniques of teaching Tamil language to children. There will be time for questions and answers. People living in Christchurch can attend the Seminar in person but must register in person,” Mr Jeyamohan said.

“We have brought in some great Tamil literature from India to cultivate the reading habits in our Tamil society to start with. The organisation runs a library for users to read and use Tamil literary texts. There is no charge for becoming a member and borrowing books,” Mr Jeyamohan said.

Mr Jeyamohan said that the first successful event of the Club was held on January 23, 2021 at the Turunga Library in Christchurch.

“The highlight of the event, attended by more than 50 Tamil families, was a debate with the Tamil Debaters Council of Sri Lanka. The theme of the debate was “Have humans gained closeness or are we separated due to the Coronavirus?’ The programme was telecast alive on YouTube,” Mr Jeyamohan said.
